We’ve come a long way here on Earth, but what goes on in the heavens is as constant as the universe is old. That’s if you don’t count the bazillion satellites, space stations, and space race discards and debris floating around up there. But, tomorrow night, we will be graced with the Perseids meteor shower. The Perseids are right up there with the Leonids, except you can enjoy the show without losing toes to frostbite (watch for the Leonids in Novembrrrrr…). Start watching the northern horizon at sunset. The shower should peak around 11:00p. In perfect conditions, you could see about 100 an hour, but the almost full moon’s brilliance will inhibit the best viewing. Trace the meteors’ tails back to their origin and you will find the constellation Perseus. Pack up some little snacky things and a sixer and invite your sweetie to join you on a blanket in the backyard. And if you miss it tomorrow, that blanket-in-the-backyard thing is great for monthly dates to howl at the moon.
